1) Despite the significant differences between European agricultural systems, as well as the
quite different potential climate-change risks that agriculture could face the future in each
European country, there are some regularities that can be identified at the three regional levels
commented above, i.e. Mediterranean, Central and Eastern Europe. Before identifying and
evaluating adaptation strategies to increase the resilience of the agricultural sector in each
region regarding climate change, scientists coming from countries of each region need to
discuss their particularities and arrive to general conclusions from each of the national’
situations. Therefore, the first ADAGIO objective is to establish regional groups and national
contacts, i.e., Mediterranean, Central and Eastern European, aimed to identify the potential
problems and to evaluate adaptation measures and related issues as defined in Task 18 this
SSP call for these regions. The ADAGIO coordinator will lead the Central European team, while
the second and third partners will lead the Mediterranean and the Eastern Europe groups,
respectively.
2) The second objective is the selection of significant vulnerable regional issues through
climate change (defined e.g. by various agricultural systems) by each partner-country and
identifying related potential problems (using the established working groups from the first
objective). Both expert knowledge and feedback from applicants will be used in that context.
The specific problems within each region must be clearly stated, as well as their similarities
and differences with other problems identified in the region. The economical importance and
the socioeconomic relevance of the identified issues must be taken into account. There are
tremendous agriculture adaptation measures, each of them may suitable for different region
according to different local conditions. Therefore differences among the countries comprising
each region must be pointed out as well.
3) The third objective is to identify feasible potential adaptation measures for the selected
regional agricultural systems, based on the identified problems from Objective 2. This will be
done by assessments (including using models) by the regional groups, by using expert
Knowledge, by using feedbacks from meetings etc. The assessments should also identify
ongoing trends or adaptations in order to evaluate potential future adaptation measures. The
CAP reforms, new water prices and other regional policies that might interact with the risks
associated to climate change should be taken in account as well in the conducting
assessments.
4) The fourth and last objective will identify dissemination strategies of adaptation measures to
decision-makers and list possibilities of “how adaptation issues could be integrated into
management strategies and into agricultural policy” (see Task 18 of this SSP call). Using the
regional results of the project, each country will identify possible ways of dissemination and
integration in decision-making and demonstrate it by reliable examples. The results of each
assessment will be presented to the local authorities, farmer’ associations and all the relevant
stakeholders that might be involved.
